May 16th MISCELLANY

  • Antiwar.com needs your help to stay open!

  • The new Imperial Groupthink in Washington is that ending indefinite detention without a trial would reward terrorists. How, exactly? If they're terrorists, can't you just, you know, put them on trial?

  • The new third rail in Oregon politics is apparently the state's medical marijuana law. Ellen Rosenblum ran on her opponent's anti-medical marijuana actions as US Attorney, and crushed him nearly two to one. The Democratic Party might want to pay attention to this. Oregon is in the bag for Obama in 2012, but popular sentiment favoring medical marijuana is spreading in blue states and prohibitionist attitudes are on the decline. Eventually they're going to have to join the cause, similarly to the present shift on gay marriage. (Spoiler: I never smoked pot before and I don't smoke pot now, but my family history indicates that I might have very good reasons to start using medical marijuana in the future.)

  • Deb Fischer scored a surprise win in the Nebraska Republican Primary for Ben Nelson's Senate seat, mostly on the strength of the Tea Party. Which makes me wonder whether they were aware of how much she benefits from Federal subsidies. Her opponent, former Senator Bob Kerrey, has an uphill battle. As of two months ago, he was losing to her by ten points according to PPP. On the bright side, he's got a boatload of money.

  • Via a friend of mine, the Remote Control Flying Fuck. No, I do not have one. By implication, I cannot give one.

Scalzi’s Latest: But I didn’t get MY say!

John “Breathtakingly Brilliant” Scalzi has made another breathtakingly brilliant post.  At 800 comments and late at night, he finally said “Enough,” especially because everyone was repeating himself (and anyone who didn’t notice the non-sex-specific “he” in that sentence might have problems with this conversation).  Point is, I had something to say about it, and, after reading all 800 comments, no one said it.  So I will say it here.

First, please read his post.

Okay, when I say it is ‘breathtakingly brilliant,” I mean it, because it has beautifully redefined things for me.  It was a classic case of, “You’re bothered by this metaphor, so let me give you a new metaphor without the emotional baggage, so that, just maybe, we can discuss the actual issue.”  It worked.

And, in so doing, it highlighted my problem with the whole, massive bundle.  My problem can be stated thus: All of this effort put into either a) How do we make the game more fair, or b) At least making us aware of how unfair the rules are,  makes it that much harder to focus on what is, to me, most important: THE FUCKING GAME SUCKS.

I don’t want to play it, I don’t want to be forced to play it, I don’t want strangers to have no choice but to play it; I don’t like smug assholes “dropping out” to live in the woods and then claiming they aren’t playing it.

The game needs to go.  It needs to be replaced by a game that doesn’t have a wealth stat, or an education stat, because those things are just always maxed for everyone.  It needs to be replaced by a game in which the stats are different talents, and the only thing to put points in are interests and passions.

John calls his game real life, and he’s right, it is.  But I passionately, deeply believe it isn’t the only choice for what real life can be.  Most people will believe my desire here is unrealistic, and dismiss it; but we must not forget that many of these people believe (or believed) that voting for Obama made a difference, so exactly who is unrealistic is open for debate.  In terms of material wealth and capacity for wealth production, there is, at present, enough to create the game I want, or at least get pretty close.   In order to concentrate on changing the rules for stat setting, you must believe the game is always going to be there, more or less the same.

I will never accept that.

If you can't beat 'em, beat 'em!
I'm working on my own Good Omens dreamcasting, for shits and giggles and a deep-seated, possibly pathological belief that I could do a damn good one if I set my mind to it.

Not all by myself, though, gods. He'p me!

I've got pretty much all the Supernatural Beings down, I think, and I'm working on the humans. I need suggestions. Particularly for Newt, Shadwell, and the Them. Children are so hard to cast, since they grow and change so fast, and I don't watch a lot of movies and shows with kids in them.

(Someone at the [info]discworld group had the BEST SUGGESTION EVER for Thou-Shalt-Not-Commit-Adultery Pulsifer and Agnes Nutter. I will be using that idea and crediting, of course.)

One was Johnny, who lived by himself . . . .
And he liked it like that.

Of all the Maurice Sendak books people have celebrated and talked about how they shaped their character, etc. I will name my personal favorite from the Nutshell Library. My mother insisted on reading "Chicken Soup With Rice" to us. But my all time favorite was, and still is, One was Johnny. It spoke to my inner me. Oh, how I envied Johnny growing up. And, in Maurice Sendak fashion, this did not conclude with some Very Important Lesson about how we all need someone after all.

One was Johnny, who lived by himself AND HE LIKED IT LIKE THAT!

So I was delighted to find this musical version, sung by Carole King, on Youtube.

Mom, again
Mom came home from the hospital on Friday.

Mom is on her way to the hospital with a possible dislocated or broken thumb. She has no idea what she did but it's black and blue and looks wrong.

Sigh.

UPDATE: Her thumb is not broken, it's just a deformity due to arthritis. Still don't know how she got the bad bruse though.

our prayers are always answered. that miracles can happen.
I just had one of those labor-saving strokes of genius that I need to share with the world. Which is to say, the easiest method ever in the history of popovers.

Here is my basic popover recipe:

2 tablespoons solid fat (butter or animal fat (duck fat, mmm) or solid shortening)
3 large eggs, at room temperature
1 cup (250 ml) whole milk, at room temperature
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1 cup (140 g) all purpose or white whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon vital wheat gluten

This tactic assumes you own a wand blender and a wide-mouthed quart Mason jar and a microwave. If not, just make the popovers the way you normally would--or if you are missing the wand blender but have a normal blender, you can melt the butter in a different container and use the normal blender.

About an hour or two before dinner, take your Mason jar. Put the butter/whatever in it. Put it in the microwave and melt it. (If you are making Yorkshire pud and are waiting for the roast to be finished before you add the fat, skip this step for now, and stir the fat in before you bake the popovers.)

Add the milk, eggs, salt, and sugar to the butter in the Mason jar (or blender)(or just put them in the blender if you are adding the fat later). Do not put the eggs directly into the hot butter before diluting it with the milk. Otherwise you will have scrambled eggs, which are nice, but not popovers.

Whiz them all up with the wand blender.

Add the flour and the wheat gluten.

Whiz that too, until you have a nice smooth batter.

Let the batter sit on the counter until dinner is nearly ready. If you are roasting something at 400 degrees, you're good; otherwise preheat your oven to 400 (F). (200 C)

Liberally grease 9 cups of a 12-cup muffin tin, or if you are making Yorkshire pud, drizzle a little of the fat from the roast into the bottom of the cups. If you have one of the giant-sized six muffin muffin tins, then you will have bigger popovers and they need to bake a little longer.

Using silicon cups for this results in popovers without stumps or a lot of loft, as they just levitate themselves out of the super-slick cups entirely. They still taste good!

If you are using fat from the roast you're making, add it now and stir it in.

Divide the popover batter between the nine greased cups. You can just pour it from the blender or the Mason Jar.

Stick in oven. Do not peek! If you open the door before they are set, they won't rise properly.

Bake for 35 minutes or until deep mahogany brown.

Pull pan from oven. Tilt popovers in cups, or remove them to a rack or basket. Pierce each one with a bamboo skewer. (careful of the steam!) The purpose of these two procedures is to (a) prevent them from getting soggy and (b) prevent them from collapsing.

Eat.

However you meant to eat them. Do not plan on leftovers.

Wash your one. dirty. dish. Oh, and the wand blender, sure. And the muffin tin. But that was inevitable.

ETA: Nota Bene

For even more loft in your popovers, preheat the muffin tin with the grease in it in the 400-degree oven for a few minutes before pouring the batter in. This is a bit tricky, though, and can be skipped.

May 15th MISCELLANY

  • The latest attempt to scam us into war with Iran.

  • "A number of women have come forward to say they were discharged for 'personality disorders,' – which means no healthcare, no disability benefits — after they filed sexual assault charges with the chain of command against fellow servicemen." -- From this.

  • Attempts to form a new government in Greece have failed, which means they will hold new elections. Yup.

  • Yet another reason to get the hell out of Mississippi here

  • More on our first really gay President - who was, most assuredly, James Buchanan - here. Lots of money quotes in this one, especially concerning the myth of America as the land of eternal progress. If it was, then what are we to make of men like Anthony Comstock? What Comstocks, both of the left and of the right, now lurk to hurl us back into the dark ages again?

Eyecandy: Client commission tulle corset
A client asked me to do a corset-top version of my "Nyx" tulle corset design, and I loved the idea. So
this )
is what she got last week.
Just like my "Nyx"corset, it's a single layer corset made of a very special, sturdy tulle fabric. The bones (spiral steel and flat in the back) are covered with cotton satin and coutil. The lace ornaments are all carefully cut out by hand and then placed on the corset individually.

She seems to be very happy with the result, and I'm so looking forward to seeing pics of her wearing this corset.

Walk of Life

Mirrored from the latest entry in Daron's Guitar Chronicles.

(Don’t forget tonight 5pm – 7pm Eastern: Google Hangout! DGC video chat, should be viewable to all here: https://plus.google.com/106322465979385944906/posts?hl=en)

So the stupid part about being on a bus overnight that was built to sleep eight people was that we really didn’t sleep.

Bart got into his bunk but didn’t end up staying there. No one really felt like settling down; it was like a sleepover party. Colin had a nap and then got back up, and Chris never even got in bed, I don’t think. People had quiet conversations, or read a little, and checked out the various parts of the bus all over again.

It took me a little while to figure out why there were holes in all the tables. As soon as someone stuck a Coke can into one it was obvious, though. There were two toilets, one in each “lounge” area. The one in back was tiled and had gold-tone fixtures. (“Crap. This is nicer than the bathroom we have at home,” Chris joked.) The front lounge had a door that could shut us off from the driver completely, but there was a phone Marty could use to call us or vice versa. The front lounge was just a lounge, with a TV set in one corner and a VCR, while in the back the corners held some kitchen stuff, a microwave, coffee maker, freezer and so on. Ten people could comfortably hang around in the back, twelve if you were friendly. The banquette-type seats that lined it had drawers under them. There were also storage drawers under the double bunks that could be pulled out so that instead of eight bunks, you could sleep twelve.

The shower really seemed like something from the set of a science fiction movie. The entire interior was a uniform beige color and it was like it had been molded from a single piece of plastic, which I guess it was. When Chris got in I seriously wondered how he’d wash the lower half of himself since there wasn’t room for him to bend over. Those of us of the smaller species of human had a lot less trouble. Chris said he planned to shower at the venues whenever he could, which got a thumbs up from Carynne.

Preview and Pre-Order Leslie Fish's NEW Album, AVALON IS RISEN, With 3 Tracks Free
From [info]egoldberg:
Hi everyone --

For the past 4 years, producer Kristoph Klover has been dedicating sweat, passion and countless hundreds of hours of late-night studio time on a quest to deliver Leslie Fish's most evocative and crafted recording yet, capturing Leslie's personality and her guitar wizardry at its best.

Titled Avalon is Risen, this project features newly crafted recordings of Leslie's best-known and most powerful Pagan and bardic songs. Songs that are thoroughly enjoyable by Pagans and non-Pagans alike.

And I'm thrilled to announce that it's finally at the duplicators, and ready for your pre-order!

By pre-ordering, you'll be first in line to receive the first CDs on June 15th. And thanks to the Internet, you'll also receive a full MP3 album download instantaneously.

Honoring the bardic tradition of these songs, we commissioned Celtic illustrator Bradley Schenck to create a 32-page, fully-illustrated color lyric booklet that's as beautifully crafted as the CD, designed in the tradition of finely ornamented Celtic books. (And did we mention an introduction by author Diana Paxson herself?! ;-)

As an extra bonus, your pre-order entitles you a 25% limited-time discount off any of CDs or digital downloads of our other albums (featuring Julia Ecklar and friends) -- and our gratitude for your support in making this independent music possible.

-- HOW TO LISTEN & PRE-ORDER --

If you'd like to receive the the special 25% discount pricing on our other CDs, please make pre-order from this page:
http://www.prometheus-music.com/avalonpreorder.html

You can preview the entire Avalon is Risen album (and download 3 full MP3s at no charge):

Blergh.
http://wiredandrewired.tumblr.com/post/22759571309/every-time-someone-pairs-starscream-with
Uh.  To be fair.  The world could also be dying because of the HOLY BLATANT DOMESTIC ABUSE that underscores this ship through most continuities…and it’s disturbing how okay people are with that.  Is it weird that I’m bothered by how okay people are with that?  Maybe it’s just me.  ._.
I probably shouldn't even bother saying anything, especially since someone on Tumblr will probably never see this anyway.

But... any time I see something like this, I just want to ask the people who imply that M/SS shippers are okay with domestic abuse why they never bother to ask us about that. It just exists in some magical space within their minds that we are okay with abuse, or that we don't know what it is, or that we've never dealt with it in our own lives. Because actually asking us is... what? Is too difficult? Or is it that they know that we'll have intelligent answers (though quite possibly ones they still disagree with), and it's easier to assume we're clueless and thus not have to think about it at all.

I dunno. I completely understand why people don't like M/SS. It lends itself to really bombastic emotional pyrotechnics and heavy, emotionally risky SM, even when it's portrayed as completely consensual. That is not for everybody.

And even beyond that -- most stories are propelled by conflict. Without conflict, there can't be a plot. Sure, there can be PWP, and PWP is great. But if you do want a plot, and the story is about relationships or sex, well, then an M/SS story might actually be about a fight, rather than everything being obviously consensual every second. That could easily upset people too, which is why I think the vast majority of M/SS fic needs warnings everywhere. (Though I will admit that I do find it amusing to snark in the warnings. Which may not be terribly nice of me, but well... it's M/SS. It's kind of impossible for it not to make some people uneasy, just because it's that kind of a pairing.)

What I don't understand is the level of investment it takes to find what we're doing disturbing. If you're that invested, you should have the ball bearings to say something like "Hello."

*smh*

Ennnnnyhoo. I haven't written TF fic in a while anyway. I'm deeply invested in working on Salvation right now -- though as some of you already know, some of the dynamics between the main characters in that are the same. I've got some TF fic ideas bouncing around in my head, though. Most involving gen fic about Dreadwing, because I'd already had an idea for a fic about him anyway and last ep has solidified that I heart him.

(At least until he turns 'Bot. If that happens, all my ragefaces for him because traitors are dumb unless they are Starscream. >_< But all my yays for everyone else if it means Starscream going home.)

Fourth Street Fantasy Convention

This is a reminder to everyone who might be interested that Fourth Street Fantasy Convention is approaching.  For those who don’t know, this is a small convention (100+ people) heavily oriented toward writing and writers–I sort of made it up back in, I think, the late 80′s so I could hear smart people argue about problems I was having.  The theory is that anything that is about writing is also about reading; “How to Read Better” has always been an unstated discussion topic.

What distinguishes Fourth Street from most conventions are two things: 1. A very high percentage of professionals (writers, editors); and B. Strict single-track programming with lunch breaks, so everyone can be at every panel (and, of course, continue the arguments from one to the other).  It used to be that did the programming; lately it’s mostly Alec Austin with help from Tom Whitmore and me, and I’ve been delighted by how things have gone.  I have learned stuff.  I think it has helped me write better; I know it has helped me get more out of my reading.

Check out who will be there (John Scalzi, Elizabeth Bear, Will Shetterly, Emma Bull, &c &c)

It’ll be in Minneapolis, June 22-24, and for actual, useful details, go here.

I’d love to see all of you there.

The latest @CBSNews/@nytimes poll is suspect.
There's a massive selection bias in this poll:

Romney 46
Obama 43

Why do I say that there's a selection bias? Because:

This poll was conducted by telephone on May 11-13, 2012 among 615 adults nationwide, including 562 registered voters, who were first interviewed for a CBS News/New York Times Poll conducted April 13-17, 2012.

This might make for good narrative building, but it makes for a lousy scientific poll.

That's not to say that the poll is out of the ballpark. Rasmussen has Romney up four, Gallup has Obama up one. It is to say that any future polls by CBS News and the New York Times need to be taken with a lot of salt, until they fix their methodology.

Greetings!

One week from today, the amazing Mistress Marion of Heatherdale mka Heather Dale, and her partner Ben Deschamps, will be performing at my house here on the border between The Barony of Storvik and the Shire of Roxbury Mill! Those of you who have not heard Mistress Marion perform, or who have only heard her perform from her many tapes, should not miss this fantastic chance to see her performing live! Those of you who have had the privilege to see her perform live will know why I am so excited at this opportunity to host her down here.

Please feel free to forward this announcement to any appropriate list.

signal boost: Decolonizing as an SF Writer
The wonderful [info]rcloenen_ruiz has a highly thought-provoking post up on The Future Fire editors' blog, and also as a guest post on [info]kateelliott's lj, so read and post to whichever you like :)

Also, in the post Rochita mentions the We see a different frontier project, which I have been meaning to signal-boost in general, so! here :)

Otherwise, major splat here.

Mother's Day
Wishing all the mothers out there a special day.

I'm having my mom over for dinner today and serving chicken parmesean. I can't help thinking that if Daddy were alive, Mom would be sitting in the dining room chatting Bree up while Dad and I would be in the kitchen, talking and drinking sidecars while I cooked. Think I'm gonna have one in his honor while I finish tidying before Mom gets here.

All in all, so far, the day has been quite pleasant. Bree helped cook me a very nice breakfast of her signature lemon-parmesean scrambled eggs with fried bacon as a side. I've gotten some paperwork done and just basically relaxed. Howard bought me lovely flowers and my neighbor brought me over a hand-picked bouquet from her yard. Bree also bought me a beautiful tear-inducing card and made me a ceramic plaque that says: My Hero, My Inspiration. Love that kid.

Hopefully, the rest of the day will be as pleasant.
